Guatemalan religion - merge of Mayan and Catholicism

We visited a beautiful church at Chichicastenega, and Mark Anthony talked about the merge of the ancient Mayan religion, still practiced today, and how the churches were built on the Mayan pyramids. You can see it in the entry to the church. Inside the church, they still have the candles burning through the isles, and they have duplicity of images of the lamb and Mayan iconography representing knowledge. Many Mayan people were doing offerings and candles or even ceremonies outside of the church, and at the cemetery. Inside the church, no pictures were allowed, but there were stone walls with arches, beautiful dark wood ceilings with beams and many carvings of Jesus in the inner sanctum. It was quite beautiful and lovely.
