Identity Poems
I did these poems with my middle schoolers on their identity, and the results were better than I expected. I gave them a sentence stem (Just because I am ____ doesn’t mean I am ____). With some examples — Hispanic, Asian, a girl, tall, short, a boy etc. Their work was even better than I expected. They were to fill in 5 of the lines. I love their work.
Just because I am from an island doesn't mean I only eat fish

Just because I am from Iceland does not mean we do not eat ice cream
Just because I am in the 8th grad does not mean I act like it
Just because I am a girl, doesn’t mean that I’m weak
Just because I am young, doesn’t mean I’m not mature.
Just because I am Christian, doesn’t mean I do not respect others.
Just because I am Sierra Leonean doesn’t mean I don’t respect other nations.
Just because I am 13, doesn’t mean I don’t know what I want for myself.
Just because I am Hispanic It does not mean I can’t speak English. Just because I am a kid it does not mean I can’t be smarter than an adult. Just because I am a boy it does not mean I can’t be a girl. Just because I am, a boy it does not mean a girl can be stronger than me. just because I am not from here does not mean I can’t go here. Just because I don’t speak English as good it does not mean I can’t improve in English. Just because I am funny does not mean I don’t have problems at home or school.
Just because I am dark skinned does not mean I am Mexican.
Just because I am hispanic does not mean I crossed the border.
Just because I am a girl does not mean I am not smart.
Just because I am Salvadorian does not mean I am a criminal.
Just because I am kind does not mean I am easy to trick.
Just because I am Asian doesn’t mean I have small eyes.
